Liver transplantation in India
Liver Transplant was first attempted for the first time in India in the year 1995 at the AIIMS, New Delhi though this was unsuccessful. This was followed by some unsuccessful attempts in AIIMS and in Chennai. The first successful liver transplant was carried out at centre in New Delhi in 1998.This was the first time that an Indian adult and subsequently an 18 month old child survived a cadaveric and live donor liver transplant respectively in Indian soil. There are several other hospitals which have attempted liver transplants without reported success and these include- AIIMS New Delhi, Sir Ganagaram Hospital- Delhi, Indraprastha Apollo, SGPGI- Lucknow, Stanley Medical College- Chennai. The following hospitals have had one success each and some of them had teams coming in from abroad to help- Jaslok Hospital- Mumbai, St John's Hospital- Bangalore and CMC hospital- Vellore.
