Medications and After Care
A regular follow up is mandatory after liver transplant. In the first few months after transplant one has to follow up with the team at least twice a week. Blood tests will be conducted to assess the new liver and also the patient will be screened for evidence of liver rejection or new infections. For some this period could be tedious requiring morefrequent visits and admissions. Some patients may require insulin to treat diabetes induced by steroid therapy. Generally no major preparation is required to receive a new patient at home. Clean environment, hygienic food and water and quarantine from people with overt infections (common cold, chicken pox etc) are the basic requirements. A liver biopsy may be required when the liver tests are abnormal. Alcohol is completely prohibited after liver transplant.
The standard medications given after a liver transplant are Cyclosporine, Tacrolimus, Steroids, Azathioprine- which are enumerated here.
