Lucknow, March 26 - Uttar Pradesh Governor T.v. Rajeshwar Wednesday inaugurated a complete liver transplant unit and a full-fledged department of paediatric gastro-enterology at the 23-year-old Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) here.
Both these units have been housed in an independent building as a part of the SGPGI's plans to enhance the available infrastructure there.
'This is one of the few independent liver transplant units in the country and it would go a long way in facilitating treatment of liver diseases,' said SGPGI dean R.K. Sharma.
A special liver dialysis machine has also been installed in the unit to provide much needed life-support system to those suffering from total liver failure and awaiting transplant.
Likewise the department of paediatric gastroenterology would cater to the needs of infants requiring endoscopic procedures. A dedicated intensive care unit (ICU) and a 50-bed exclusive ward are also in place.
