What is the recovery rate with distal pancreatectomy?
Q. I am suffering from chronic pancreatitis with dilated pancreati duct with calculi in the head and neck. Calculus in the head region measures 11.8 mm and tail measures 7 mm. The main pancreatic duct measures 8 mm. There is no peripancreatic collection. My doctor has recommended distal pancreatectomy. What are the chances of recovery, its risks and any other side effects?
A. The exact procedure suitable is only possible to ascertain upon looking at the MRCP/ERCP film. However, a lateral pancreatico-jejunostomy (LPJ) or a combined distal pancreatectomy plus LPJ with clearance of stones would probably be the right procedure. In general, for long-term, it is better if pancreatic tissue can be preserved, as in a LPJ alone. There is 80% chance of relief of pain if the procedure is well chosen.31 August 2006
