What is the treatment for hemangioma of the liver?

Q. What is the treatment for hemangioma in segment VII of the right lobe of the liver?

A. Hemangioma of the liver is the commonest benign tumour of the liver. A benign tumour is one that is not malignant or cancerous. Hemangiomas of the liver are never known to become malignant. They commonly occur in the right lobe of the liver, and segment VII to which you refer is part of the right lobe. The majority are solitary (single) and more common in women in the age group 40-60 years.

These are general asymptomatic and are discovered incidentally during ultrasonography or CT for some other disease such as gallstones.

No treatment is required in patients without symptoms, and they can be followed up for years without any adverse effects. Enucleation or surgical resection is necessary if patients develop pain or the tumour rapidly grows in size.
