Q. I would like to ask you one problem as one of my school friends is worried due to his dads health. His dad is having a problem as his liver has got damaged and is mostly under severe pain. The doctors said that he would have to go through those pains and once water accumulated in his stomach gets abundant, they would take the water out of his stomach. He is looking for some better option in todays hi-tech medicine days. Can you suggest any better option like liver transplant or anything better for permanent or more longer-term better treatment with referred hospitals/doctors and expected expenditures with locations. His dad is based in UP India, we are Indians working here in UAE.
A. There are lots of newer treatment options available now. One can do peritoneo-venous shunt, one can also place a stent to shunt blood from portal vein to hepatic vein, and finally even liver transplant can be done successfully in India. What he needs to do is get in touch with a good hepatologist. Alternatively you can send his medical details and we will advise what can and should be done.16 April 2003
